september 2012 seo month in review

Much as the seasons change, the field of SEO evolves every day. Inevitably a few stories are going to fall through the cracks, so make sure to stop back here every month for a rundown of the industry.

Here is a big info-dump of the (sometimes tangentially) SEO-related news and stories that were news around the Optima water cooler in September:

September 2012’s Google Updates

While the mild temperatures autumn brought around have served as an relaxing refreshment to an insanely hot Midwest summer, Google’s algorithm has been anything but relaxed. September saw a couple large algorithm changes.

    • On September 18th, Google rolled out their latest update to the Panda algorithm updates. These changes should increase overall search quality.
  • On Spetember 28th, Matt Cutts from the Google webspam team announced that exact match domains lost some of the efficacy when it came to ranking highly on google.

Other SEO News and Stories from September

Google has all but abandoned FeedBurner, which is a bit of a bummer.

comScore measures Google’s August search engine market share to be 66.4%, down slightly from July. Bing gained a small percentage of share, while Ask and AOL surprisingly did so as well.

There’s going to be a Google for pornography, specifically geared towards “.xxx” sites to help protect from the spread of malware and viruses. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of markers go into that algorithm…

In Facebook news, Facebook is charging businesses to run promotional offers now, but more importantly, have also started removing illegitimate likes from pages. Given that Facebook shares correlate with high search rankings, it’ll be interesting to see how Facebook pages losing authority in the form of Likes impact this.

And last, but certainly not least, rapper DMX uses Google for the first time. While on camera. It’s pretty much a perfect moment. Arf Arf!
